Hemp could be new cash crop for Florida farmers

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. — Potatoes have been on Danny Johns' family farm for generations in St. Johns County, and he is now considering growing something a bit different: industrial hemp.

"It might have a great fit behind potatoes, possibly as a secondary crop or a primary crop if it has the potential for that," Johns said.

Let's get one thing straight. Industrial hemp is a kind of cannabis, but it's not marijuana. THC -- the part of marijuana that makes people high -- is a lot lower in industrial hemp.

"It's got to be below 0.3 percent to be classified as industrial hemp," Johns said.

Industrial hemp is anticipated to balloon into a $22 billion industry. It is used to make CBD oil which is booming in popularity.

"The CBD oil is supposed to be good for anxiety and aches and pains," Johns said.

Industrial hemp can also be used to make paper, textiles, biodegradable plastics, construction materials and food.

While potatoes are a sure thing here in Florida, most farmers are pretty sure that industrial hemp will do well here too. However, more research has to be done.

"There are different varieties of hemp too, different plant types," Johns explained, "so we have to find the right one for Florida to make sure it stays below a 0.3 percent THC content."

Private commercial farmers, like Johns, don't have the green light to grow it just yet in Florida. Universities in the state are growing it and doing research.

Johns is waiting to see if hemp could be what he needs to keep his farm at full speed.
